First hour with a used console
Wipe, update, and lock down a second-hand console before you sign in or buy games.

Prerequisites: The console, a display, and a controller that powers on · Network access for system updates
Goal
Confirm the hardware works, install the system update, and put the console on your account — not the previous owner’s.
This is setup and care, not a recap channel and not a buyer’s guide for scalping.
- Inspect vents and ports. Wipe the case. Do not block the fan.
- Connect HDMI and power. Confirm a picture and that the controller pairs.
- Go through first-boot language and network. Install the pending system update before signing in.
- If a previous account is still present, remove it (or factory reset if you cannot).
- Create or sign in to your account. Turn on a passcode / console lock.
- Check storage health and that discs or digital licenses behave as expected.
Steps
Stub for Phase 1. Expand per platform (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo) later.
Pitfalls
Done
- Picture and audio work on your display.
- System software is current.
- Only your account remains, with a lock code set.
